Sustainability is one of the pillars on which the Valserena philosophy is based. From growing the fields to selling the cheese, every stage is monitored to reduce the environmental impact of our production chain.
Of the farm’s surface dedicated to conserving local biodiversity
To shelter various animals and bird species that can breed in peace

Respect for wildlife and water resources
Valserena adheres to the Rural Development Programme (PSR) measure for integrated farming, which regulates the use of fertilizers and herbicides in quantities and of a quality that do not harm wildlife and water resources.
5% of the farm’s surface is shaded by plants and hedges: we have flooded 26 hectares to give various animals and many bird species the chance to shelter and breed in peace.
Protecting bees through phacelia cultivation
At Valserena we dedicate space to growing phacelia, a plant whose flower bees love.
Bees are at risk of extinction… and so are we.
90% of the world’s fruit-bearing plants owe their existence to pollinating animals. The United Nations estimates that more than 75% of the world’s crops depend closely on pollinators.
And of course in our farm shop you can find the fantastic Valserena honey, made by these wonderful creatures.
CO₂ reduction thanks to no-till seeding
No-till seeding is an agronomic technique that uses special machines to sow directly into unworked soil, covered on the surface by residues of rotating crops.
- +20% production compared with the traditional technique (Frascarelli, 2018)
- -60% economic resources: fewer working hours in the field and lower fuel use
- Reduction of CO₂ emissions due to lower fuel consumption
Investments in state-of-the-art equipment
At Valserena we continuously invest in machinery and cultivation techniques that allow for low emissions and that make it possible to produce — for example hay — of a quality that allows a limited use of feed.
100% sustainable packaging
At Valserena, packaging choices are guided mainly by sustainability criteria:
- The gift packages are designed to be 100% recyclable
- Shipments are packed with compostable and 100% recyclable material
- The butter has a new compostable wrapper
- Yogurt containers in screen-printed glass are sterilized and reused — we encourage returning them to give them a second life
Environmental improvement — SRD02 ACTION A2
Thanks to intervention SRD02 ACTION A2 “Investments for the reduction of greenhouse gases and ammonia”, we have reduced the use of nitrogen pollutants and ammonia deriving from existing livestock farms.
