How much Parmesan to buy: a guide to quantities

Ordering too little Parmigiano for a cheese board, or too much for a quick grating, happens more often than you might think. Here is a practical guide to quantities, based on how you intend to use it.

For an appetizer board

If Parmigiano is one of the stars of a platter alongside other cured meats and cheeses, calculate about 50-70 grams per person. For an aperitif for 6-8 people, a 500g piece is generally sufficient if accompanied by other products.

4-6 people

300-400g of Parmigiano for the board

8-10 people

500-700g of Parmigiano for the board

For grating in the kitchen

For daily family use (pasta, risottos, gratins), a 500g-1kg piece lasts on average 3-4 weeks for a family of 3-4 people, assuming regular but not intensive consumption.

Did you know?

A 500g piece of Parmigiano corresponds to about 15-18 cooking portions (an average portion to grate over a plate of pasta is about 25-30g).

For a gift

For a gastronomic gift, our pre-packaged boxes solve the quantity dilemma: the 24-month Parmigiano Box with a knife is designed for individual or couple consumption, while the multi-aging boxes (such as the Premium 5-Aging Box) are perfect when you want to offer a more extensive tasting experience.

"It is better to calculate a few extra grams than to run out during a dinner — leftover Parmigiano keeps perfectly for weeks."

For events and corporate gifts

If you are organizing a corporate event or a gift for several people (employees, clients), calculate at least one individual pack per person rather than one large piece to divide — it is easier to distribute and perceived as a more thoughtful gesture.

And if you have leftovers?

No problem: Parmigiano Reggiano keeps well for weeks if wrapped correctly (you can find the complete guide in our article on fridge storage), so calculating a few extra grams is never a waste.

In short

  • Appetizer board: 50-70g per person
  • Daily family use: 500g-1kg lasts 3-4 weeks
  • Gifts: one individual pack per person
  • Better to have too much: leftover Parmigiano keeps well
